2017 is the year to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands

· In case you needed another reason to add the US Virgin Island to your travel list in 2017... ·

The US Virgin Islands are celebrating their 100th year anniversary of becoming U.S. territory by offering visitors $300 to spend on historical and cultural activities. Choose between the islands of St. John, St. Croix, or St. Thomas, or visit all of them.

Fine Print:

You must visit (the website has been down for a few hours, no doubt overwhelmed by the initial response) and book a 3 night minimum stay at a participating location. Each visitor will then receive $300 to spend on historical and cultural activities.

I’m pretty sure that frozen daiquiris by the pool will not count as a cultural activity but the good news is that there are plenty of other tours and things to see and do that are qualified activities. Even kayaking and hiking tours will count as cultural experiences- and a good opportunity to burn off those daiquiris. Museums, forts, and plantations should also fall under the accepted guidelines but check with the department of tourism before you make your plans. There are also special events going on all year, check out the website to see a full listing.

Tip: Travel in March to receive a commemorative souvenir on top of the $300 in savings. Transfer Day, a holiday observed every year on March 31st in the U.S. Virgin Islands, celebrates the day that the U.S. took possession of the islands.

Since this is U.S. territory citizens of the United States do not need a passport to travel to these three islands (just make sure that any connecting flights are not in a foreign country). The currency is the U.S. dollar, how easy is that? The only thing to keep in mind is that cars drive on left, as they do in England. Not sure why that is, but chalk it up to island charm.

The U.S. Virgin Islands have been identified as a Zika outbreak area by the CDC so take the necessary precautions. And don’t forget to pack the sunscreen!

So what are you waiting for….go book that trip! And send pictures πŸ™‚
